But unlike a passenger vehicle’s hydraulic brake system, a commercial truck’s stopping power depends on compressed air moving through the compressor, governor, dryer, tanks, valves, lines, chambers, slack adjusters, and spring brakes.
A problem anywhere in that chain can reduce braking performance, trigger a roadside inspection violation, or leave a truck stranded. Air-system defects are also easy to miss if a driver only looks at brake shoes, drums, pads, or rotors.
For owner-operators and fleet managers, the most important warning signs are often changes in air pressure, unusual sounds, unexpected spring-brake activity, and uneven brake application. Here are five problems that deserve immediate attention.
1. Air Pressure Builds Slowly or the Warning Light Stays On
A properly maintained air brake system should build pressure within a reasonable amount of time after startup. If the gauges rise slowly, the low-air warning buzzer remains active, or the compressor seems to run continuously, the system may not be producing or retaining air properly.
What it usually means
Common causes include:
- A worn or failing air compressor
- A damaged compressor drive or intake problem
- A malfunctioning governor
- A restricted air dryer or discharge line
- A significant leak in an air line, tank, valve, or brake chamber
- Excessive moisture or contamination inside the system
The governor controls when the compressor loads and unloads. If it is not working correctly, the compressor may cut in too late, fail to cut out, or struggle to maintain normal operating pressure.
Why it matters
A truck with inadequate air pressure may not have enough reserve to apply and release the brakes consistently. Low pressure can also cause the spring brakes to apply as the system approaches its emergency range.

2. Air Pressure Drops Faster Than Normal
A slow leak can become a major failure without much warning. You may hear air escaping after shutdown, notice the gauge falling while the truck is parked, or see pressure drop rapidly during a brake application.
What it usually means
Air can escape through:
- Chafed, cracked, or improperly supported air lines
- Loose fittings
- Damaged gladhand seals
- Leaking brake chambers
- Faulty valves
- Corroded reservoirs or fittings
- A leaking air dryer or pressure protection valve
Some leaks are loud and obvious. Others are small enough to find only with soapy water applied around fittings and suspected components. A growing leak may also cause the compressor to cycle more frequently than normal.
Why it matters
Air loss reduces the reserve available for repeated stops. It can also cause the compressor to run excessively, increase heat and wear, and eventually allow the spring brakes to apply.
During a standard air-brake inspection, the system is checked with the brakes released and again with the service brake applied. Common CDL inspection limits are:
- Static leak test: No more than about 2 psi per minute for a single vehicle or 3 psi per minute for a combination vehicle
- Applied leak test: No more than about 3 psi per minute for a single vehicle or 4 psi per minute for a combination vehicle

3. The Low-Air Warning or Spring Brakes Engage Unexpectedly
The low-air warning system and spring brakes are designed to protect the truck when pressure becomes dangerously low. They should not activate during normal driving.
If the warning buzzer comes on while moving, the parking-brake valves pop out, or the spring brakes begin applying unexpectedly, stop as soon as it is safe to do so.
What it usually means
Possible causes include:
- A serious air leak
- A failing compressor or governor
- A restricted air supply
- A defective low-pressure warning switch
- A malfunctioning tractor protection valve
- A problem with the spring-brake control circuit
- Air pressure that is already too low for safe operation

4. Hissing, Air Dryer Problems, or Moisture in the Tanks
Some air dryer noise is normal. A properly functioning dryer usually purges air and moisture when the governor reaches cut-out pressure. What is not normal is constant hissing, repeated purging, no purge at all, or water collecting in the reservoirs.

The air dryer may have:
- A saturated or overdue desiccant cartridge
- A damaged purge valve
- A restricted purge line

Air brakes should apply firmly and release completely. If a truck pulls to one side, feels held back, or takes longer than normal to release after the pedal is released, the issue may be in the air-control or mechanical linkage: not simply in the friction material.
What it usually means
Possible causes include:
- A restricted or damaged air line
- A sticking relay, quick-release, or service valve
- A failing brake chamber
- Incorrect or uneven slack-adjuster travel
- A seized clevis, pin, or linkage
- A malfunctioning automatic slack adjuster
- A weak or damaged return mechanism
- Moisture or contamination in a valve
Slack adjusters transfer movement from the brake chamber to the foundation brake. Travel that is excessive, uneven from wheel to wheel, or changing during operation requires attention. Automatic slack adjusters should not be routinely “adjusted” by hand to hide an underlying problem.

- Static leak test: Build full pressure, shut off the engine, release the service and parking brakes as directed, and watch the gauge for one minute. Pressure should not fall beyond the permitted limit.
